¿Por qué no celebramos el cinco de mayo en la clase de español?
Mexican Independence Day is September 16th, so Cinco de Mayo is not Independence Day for them.
It celebrates the Battle of Puebla - a victory the Mexicans won over the French in 1862. It would be the equivalent of us celebrating the Battle of Gettysburg. (Do you know the date of the Battle of Gettysburg? / what they were fighting for?) The holiday is celebrated the most in South western United States and the Mexican state of Puebla. The holiday has been developed by commercial interests; it is another excuse for people to spend money. |
